Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday expressed his deep concern over recent developments and the fact that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis seemed to not understand “what is really going on within Greek society, and especially for those that, as you discovered during the period of the pandemic, are totally dependent on their salary or the meagre income of their small or medium-sized business.”
Tsipras was addressing parliament during the debate on a finance ministry bill, accusing the government of having an “erratic” policy and acting “on the basis of the neoliberal handbook” when the country was faced with the worst.
He criticised this as an outdated and ineffective way of thinking, which was “dangerous, especially for the coming period, which is not an economic crisis period but a war economy.” At this time, he added, the government was “worried about the price of shares on the stock market and “lest it tax the excessive profits of the few”.
