“Greece is taking advantage of the legal and substantial arsenal that it has built up in recent years and is now proceeding with seismic surveys to locate hydrocarbons in the areas southwest of Crete and the Peloponnese,” underlined Alternate Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in an interview with SKAI television on Tuesday, while he referred to the extension of Greece’s territorial waters to 12 nautical miles in the Ionian Sea and the agreement for the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone with Italy.
Asked about the extension of the territorial waters to 12 nautical miles, he said that this was Greece’s inalienable right, adding that it must be done at a time and in such a way as to guarantee Greece’s national interests.
