During her visit to Nicosia, President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Tuesday watched a military parade to mark the 64th anniversary since the Republic of Cyprus declared its independence, together with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

In a statement afterward, Sakellaropoulou stressed that October 1 was a day to remember and honour the struggles and sacrifices that led to an independent Cyprus, adding: “Sixty-four years after its foundation, and in spite of the illegal Turkish invasion of 1974 and the ongoing occupation, the Cyprus Republic is a modern European country and a pillar of stability in the surrounding region.”

She concluded by noting the “brotherly bonds” that bind Greece and Cyprus, saying the two countries will continue to fight together to liberate and reunite Cyprus and its people.”
Sakellaropoulou had earlier visited and laid wreaths at monuments linked to the 1974 Turkish invasion.
