American Literature Seminars by the US Embassy in Athens

The third round of American literature seminars, organized by the Public and Educational Programs section of the US Embassy in Athens and the Athens American Center, will be held from October 13, 2021 to January 19, 2022. from two successful cycles and a series of book presentations, the protagonists of this cycle will be a very popular art form with a strong imprint in world literature, the essay and eighteen of the most important American and American short story writers – classic as well as contemporary. The deadline for submitting applications for participation in the seminar series is Monday 27 September.
The ten meetings will be presented by the distinguished authors Theodoros Grigoriadis (State Prize for Literature 2016) and Vangelis Provias.
The authors will be: Henry, Sherwood Anderson, Dorothy Parker, Ernest Hemingway, Bernard Malamud, Patricia Highsmith, Grace Paley, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Lucia Berlin, Ann Beattie, Tobias Wolff, Amy Hempel, Lydia Davis, George Saunders, Jhumpa Lahiri, Denis Johnson and Anthony Marra.
The training program, as noted, is aimed at:
1. Philologists and English language teachers who teach in Lyceums and Gymnasiums
2. Graduates and graduates of English Philology
3. Creative writing program presenters
4. Reading club coordinators
5. Translators, readers, executives
6. Journalists covering the publishing space

The purpose of the program, as defined, is to encourage the dissemination of authors’ work in an educational context and in the context of creative writing and literacy activities.
Participants will learn about the history, evolution, and how American short stories have contributed to the diversity and dynamics of American literature. The ten meetings will take place through the Zoom platform and participants from all over Greece are accepted.
The seminars are in Greek and participation in the program is free and a certificate of participation will be given. Places are limited.
