The huge amounts of water that fell on Volos during storm ‘Elias’ caused the Krafsidonas torrent to overflow on Thursday, making this the second time the torrent has burst its banks in the last 20 days.
Major problems were also caused by another torrent to the east of Volos, Anavros, which overflowed at a point near Ag. Dimitriou street and whose waters flooded the areas of Nea Dimitriada.
The “Achillopoulio” Hospital of Volos suffered significant flood damage, with water entering the basements and other areas of the hospital but, fortunately, not those housing patients, while efforts were being made to remove the water.
Despite a traffic ban imposed by the Hellenic Police in Volos since Wednesday – and which remains in force until further notice – several people were driving their cars in the wider Volos area, making the situation worse in the flooded and muddy streets and in the city center.
Serious problems were also reported on the Volos ring road, while road access to Agria, Ano and Kato Lechonia and all of South Pelion remained cut off due to the complete destruction of the road to Agria by a third torrent.
There are a number of military vehicles currently on the streets of Volos, while the Hellenic Navy landing ship “Ikaria” was also in the port to provide support and assistance if needed.
Additionally, a total of 18 people who were rescued by the Fire Brigade after becoming trapped in their homes during the storm late on Wednesday, spent the night in the ferry “Super Star” in the port of Volos. Five people were still on the ship on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the shipping ministry announced that all morning trips of the ferries “Super Star” and “Express Skiathos”, as well as of the flying dolphin “Erato” were cancelled. North-northeasterly winds of up to 6 on the Beaufort scale were blowing in the area.
