SPRINGFIELD, Pa. – Crozer-Keystone Health System recently recognized Mary Nunes, R.N. of Glenolden, a home health and hospice nurse, as a recipient of the DAISY Award. This award recognizes nurses who consistently meet each of the following criteria: Dedicated, Autonomous, Innovative, Selfless and Extraordinary.

Nunes was nominated for the award by one of her patients, who said that “Mary was extremely helpful, patient and accommodating. She always called in advance to let me know what time she would be here, and answered all my questions (which were many!) with much courtesy. She was very polite to both me and my family. Since I have a colostomy bag, there were many problems at first, and Mary took care of them in the kindest way. She then taught me how to change the bag myself without making me feel foolish. Mary was a very caring nurse and deserves this award!”

“Mary is dedicated and highly skilled,” says Jane Hanahan, MHA, B.S.N., R.N., administrative director of Crozer-Keystone Home Health and Hospice. “She is very caring, and listens to and acknowledges her patients. They, in turn, respond. I know I speak for her colleagues as well when I say how proud we are of Mary.”

DAISY Foundation and DAISY Award

Thanks for reading Hellenic News of America

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 at the age of 33 from complications from an autoimmune disease. The care that Barnes and his family received from nurses throughout his illness inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Each DAISY Award honoree is recognized at a public ceremony on his or her unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a beautifully hand-carved stone sculpture. In addition, the unit celebrates their colleague’s achievement with Cinnabon cinnamon rolls, which were a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness.
