WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Katie McGinty to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate. She is running against Senator Pat Toomey, whom EMILY’s List recently put “On Notice” for his extreme anti-woman, anti-family record.

“Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Katie has spent the last 25 years passionately advocating for working families,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List. “Pennsylvania has never elected a woman to the U.S. Senate, but Katie never shies away from firsts – she was the first person in her family to attend college, the first woman to chair the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the first woman to serve as secretary of Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection. The Senate could use a woman like Katie, who has proven her commitment to creating middle-class jobs and preserving the environment. The EMILY’s List community of over three million members is excited to support Katie as she campaigns to bring bold new ideas to the United States Senate.”

Katie McGinty has dedicated her career to public service and being a champion for working class families in Pennsylvania. Through her focus on investment in clean energy across the state, her efforts brought a billion dollars in new resources to Pennsylvania and created 3,000 new jobs. Because of Katie’s pragmatism and creativity, Pennsylvania became number one in the country in wind energy jobs, number two in solar, and a pioneer in energy efficiency technology.

As Pennsylvania’s first woman senator, Katie will work tirelessly to preserve the opportunities that allowed her middle-class parents to put her through college. The ninth of 10 children, Katie was born in northeast Philadelphia to a police officer and a restaurant hostess. She knows firsthand that increasing the minimum wage is vital in helping middle-class parents trying to make ends meet. Katie graduated at the top of her class and was the first person in her family to attend college. Now the mother of three daughters, Katie will fight to guarantee that no children give up on dreams because they can’t afford to pay skyrocketing college tuition bills.

Pennsylvanians are tired of Senator Toomey’s failed leadership and extreme agenda, which is one of the worst when it comes to supporting dangerous policies that hurt hardworking Americans. Katie’s results-oriented leadership within the state and her commitment to fighting for greater economic opportunity for more women, men, and families shows that she will be the champion Pennsylvanians need in the United States Senate.

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $400 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making it one of the most successful political organizations ever. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research women’s issues, and turn out women voters. We’ve trained over 9,000 women to run and helped elect over 100 women to the House, 19 to the Senate, 11 governors, and over 700 to state and local office. Since its founding in 1985, almost one-third of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
