With 625 votes in favour, the Plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday decided to terminate the term of office of Eva Kaili as a vice-president of the European Parliament and strip her of her duties. There was one vote against and two abstentions.
“In view of the ongoing investigations, the European Parliament has decided that Eva Kaili is no longer one of its Vice-Presidents. This decision is effective immediately. We will continue to fully cooperate with relevant national law enforcement and judicial authorities,” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said on Tuesday on Twitter.
Over 1.5 million euros in cash confiscated
More than 1.5 million euros in cash was confiscated from the Greek MEP Eva Kaili and former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, according to a report in the Belgian newspaper ‘Le Soir’ on Tuesday.
In a raid on Panzeri’s home in Brussels, Belgian federal judicial police investigators found 600,000 euros. Added to the sums found in the possession of Kaili’s father, and in her home in Brussels, the investigation has uncovered more than 1.5 million euros, the newspaper said.
