The experts committee on the train collision at Tempi delivered their report to State Minister responsible for infrastructure and transport Giorgos Gerapetritis on Tuesday.
Gerapetritis received the report at 18:00 by the chairman of the committee. A copy will be directly sent to the appeals prosecutor in Larissa, central Greece, who is investigating the deadly accident on February 28. The ministry will request permission of the prosecutor to publicise the report.
The committee’s job, according to a statement it issued on the conclusion of its work, was to “investigate and highlight the systemic problems and dysfunctions related to the railroad accident that occurred on February 28, 2023 at the entrance to the Valley of Tempi.” A total of 57 people died and scores were injured when a passenger and a freight train collided as they approached from opposite directions between Athens and Thessaloniki.
Committee members began working on the report on March 6, they said, while they added that “the report does not concern itself with identifying or delegating responsiblities, a power that according to the Greek Constitution is vested only with relevant legislative authorities.” The report includes a series of immediate, short-, medium-, and long-term measures for the safe, smooth, and effective operation of railroad transportation in Athens, the members said, expressing the hope that the report is not used by Greek parties for political exploitation or confrontation.
