Some years ago it seemed like a science fiction script. Today it is a reality, which can provide many solutions in emergency situations, helping our fellow human beings.

The first flight with SmieA (drone), today at noon, for the transport of drugs, which had a take-off point at GiSeMi HUB in Trikala and a pharmacy destination in the area of Leptokarya, was crowned with absolute success.

“These are not science fiction scenes”, stressed the mayor of Trikala and president of KEDE, Dimitris Papastergiou, in APE-MPE.

“These are moments from tomorrow and not too distant tomorrow of our daily life, how we can in emergencies, at least at this time we try, and tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, in real conditions and everyday life, to transport essential items, such as medicines . “Today we are closing exactly one year since the disaster in Karditsa, in” Ianos “and if we had such a vehicle last year, we could have solved problems that had arisen at that time, very quickly and immediately”, noted Mr. Papastergiou. He urged “not to be technophobic, but to seek and find technological solutions where there are real problems.”

As it was emphasized in the event that preceded the test flight, this is an important program of assistance in the transfer of pharmaceutical material, which will be implemented by the Development Societe Anonyme of the Municipality of Trikala, e-Trikala SA, during the current period, participating in the European program “HARMONY” being the national pilot of the European large-scale project for sustainable transport of pharmaceutical material to cities, via drone flights.

The pilot application in the city of Trikala, concerns the issue of air urban traffic, and in particular provides for the use of aerial automatic means (drones) for the transport of pharmaceutical material, from the Cooperative of Pharmacists of Trikala  to regional pharmacies. The drone system will be piloted for two months, based on the regulatory framework of the Civil Aviation Department. The pilot application is more important in emergency situations, due to the need for faster and more efficient transport of goods and use of telematics applications.

So today, during the European Mobility Week, the first test flight of the European project “HARMONY” in Trikala took shape. The dispatch of the drugs by drone was undertaken by the Pharmacy of the Cooperative of Pharmacists of Trikala (SYFTA), while the respective package will be received by the competent pharmacist of the village. The pilot test was carried out in the presence of the mayor of Trikala and president of KEDE, Dimitris Papastergiou, the executives of the Civil Aviation Service, the Association of Pharmacists of Trikala and bodies of the European program. The purpose of the “HARMONY” project, according to what was emphasized at the event, is to support the 21 partners in the use of cutting-edge technologies, creating innovative solutions in the field of transport and health, in order to improve the safety and quality of life of citizens.

The coordinator of the program is UCL (University College London) and at the national level e-Trikala SA and the University of the Aegean participate. The program is part of the EU funding framework for Horizon Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020), in the category “Smart, green and integrated transport”, with a duration of 42 months.
