The new Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis took over the ministry from his predecessor, caretaker minister Prof. Pantelis Kapros, in a handover ceremony on Tuesday, expressing hope that fiscal policy will not again be needed to provide assistance to energy policy, as happened during the recent energy crisis.
Outlining the ministry’s priorities, Skylakakis especially emphasised the climate crisis and the need to meet the country’s commitments in terms of energy and the environment, as well as completing the green transition in an “volatile and changing energy environment”.
He said the goal was to increase the penetration of renewables in electricity production to 80 pct, the energy upgrades of 600,000 homes, programmes for energy conservation and e-mobility and policies on waste, protection of forests and the power markets.
