State spending on Greece’s National Health Sustem currently nears 5.2 billion, noted the new Health Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis on Tuesday, during the handover ceremony with outgoing caretaker Health Minister Anastassia Kotanidou.
Chryssochoidis also mentioned that 80 hospitals and 156 health centers will be upgraded via the EU Recovery Fund and noted that the government planned to hire 10,000 medical staff – mainly nurses – and expanding the ongoing preventative medical tests programs.
“Prevention should be within everyone’s reach, wherever they may reside, it should be carried out electronically and at no cost for the people,” he emphasized.
Even though several issues in the country’s NHA remain unresolved, he added, “we will re-establish the NHS, together with staff.”
