On Sunday, October 30, The Hellenic News of America will proudly celebrate its twenty-ninth anniversary. It is almost three decades now since the idea of giving voice to the social, cultural, economic, and spiritual life of the Greek community of the Tristate Area was born in the mind of Paul Kotrotsios, a native of Epirus settled with his young family in Philadelphia. Since then, The Hellenic News of America has grown from a community bulletin to a large monthly journal with national and international outreach. It has become with the years a vital resource in the life of our Diaspora community, and a bridge connecting us with our compatriots and loved ones in Greece. Through it, we are kept abreast of the events in our Mother Country, and find in it the expression of our abiding nostalgia. At the same time, we find in it too every aspect of our vibrant life in our adopted homeland.
Reflecting on the anniversary brings to mind, as every year, my own experience in reporting on cultural events and personalities for The Hellenic News, and the many friends I have made through interviews and artistic collaborations. Through it, I have come to forge a deep connection with the members of our community. Above all, however, The Hellenic News has through the years represented the vision and personality of its founder. I can still vividly recall my first encounter with Paul Kotrotsios, and the warm interest he showed in my own career as an actress, musician, author, and journalist. When we shook hands that day, I knew a permanent relationship had been formed. Our collaboration has been an inspiration and a delight ever since.
The Hellenic News today, vastly increased in size and circulation, publishes fascinating and varied articles monthly from expert professionals in the world of the arts, the sciences, and academia. But it does much more than present the news and give voice to the many gifted members of our community. It is committed to peace, justice, and honor for all peoples and races. Under Paul Kotrotsios and the journal’s now Co-Publisher, the lovely and talented Aphrodite Kotrotsios, it continues to fulfill and extend its mission. May it flourish for many years to come, and to you, my dear readers of these many years, may I send on this occasion all my wishes for your health, happiness, and prosperity.
