Washington, D.C.– The Hellenic Society Prometheas and AHEPA Chapter 31, in cooperation with the Embassy of Cyprus, are honored to invite you to a poignant concert titled “Cyprus ’74 – Songs of Anguish and Pain,” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. This significant event will take place on Saturday, October 5, at 6:00 p.m. in the Frosene Hall of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

This concert will feature the music of the late composer Dimitris Papapostolou, whose powerful works encapsulate the deep emotional impact of the 1974 invasion. While living in Washington, D.C., Papapostolou was moved to set to music poems written by fellow students, expressing the collective anguish felt by the Cypriot people. The songs were released on an LP record, with all proceeds donated to the Cyprus relief fund for refugees. His generosity and dedication to the cause earned him recognition from the then-Ambassador of Cyprus, Nikos Dimitriou, during a special reception at the Embassy.

The concert will feature performances by the Koliavasilis Music Ensemble and will be graced by the presence of the Ambassador of Cyprus, Evangelos Savva, along with other dignitaries. Following the performance, attendees are invited to a reception, providing an opportunity to reflect on the significance of this historical moment and to engage with community members and leaders.

Join us for this moving tribute that not only honors the memory of those affected by the invasion but also celebrates the resilience and spirit of the Cypriot people.
