Interview with Dr. Justin Piasecki

By: Markos Papadatos

Recently, Dr. Justin Piasecki chatted via telephone with Markos Papadatos about his medical practice.

Particularly impressive about Dr. Justin Piasecki and his practice is that he has pioneered plastic micrographic surgery, where he combines the Mohs surgery with cosmetic reconstruction, thus making it very cost-effective and time efficient. “It’s a little different than most practices out there,” he said. “I am the only certified Mohs doctor out there who is also board certified in plastic surgery, as well as facial plastic surgery. It’s a one-stop shop and I built the Skin Care Center in the Seattle area which is designed for these procedures. There is a higher quality of care and it is cost-effective.”

Dr. Piasecki graduated from Stanford University with honors, enrolled in Vanderbilt Medical School and he completed a 5-year plastic surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin, as well as a Mohs Surgery fellowship at the University of British Columbia; moreover, he is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, as well as the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Most recently, Dr. Piasecki was profiled on “The Doctors,” where he was chosen as their doctor for “March of 2013” and was subsequently listed as one of the most beautiful doctors in America.

“That was a lot of fun. I don’t put too much thought in those things since I grew up in a town of 1,000 people and I’m from a blue-collar family. It was fun to do, but I have not gotten caught up in the whirlwind of it. That show is donating its proceeds to the American Red Cross which is a wonderful organization and cause. The people that were at the show were top-notch and really professional. It was a nice experience,” he said. “Jill actually came to the taping in Los Angeles and she got a kick out of it. It was an ‘interesting honor.’”

In addition to his medicine practice, Dr. Piasecki is a husband to Jill and a father to three daughters.

Jill plays an integral role at the Skin Care Center since she assists him with the business side of the practice. “Jill and I met at Stanford and she has a degree in economics. She does a great job running the business side of things. I see the patients and she takes care of everything else.”

Regarding his plans for the future for the Skin Care Center, he stated, “The goal is to educate and to get the word out there to patients and people. We want to be proactive and to ensure that they have a full understanding of their options available for treatments. On a daily basis, I try to evolve and improve the fashion in which I care for my patients with better efficiency and to make them feel comfortable, as well as to try to make it painless for them.”

When asked how he balances a medical career with a family life, he responded, “I don’t sleep very much. It brings up the important paradigm that life is really just a struggle about balance. We are happier when we are doing things that we enjoy. I love everything that I do, whether it is to go to work each day and cure cancer and put people’s lives back together and I love spending time with my family and I enjoy the great outdoors. All of these things complement one another.”

On his inspiration to study medicine, Dr. Piasecki remarked, “I have always had a real interest in science since I was a little kid. I have always loved biology and medicine was a natural segue from that. I want to take science and knowledge and apply it in a way to help people. It was a natural calling. Once I got into medical school, I gravitated towards surgery since you have more control over the problem that you are trying to solve, which is a neat and gratifying experience. Plastic surgery was one level beyond that since it helps to bring people’s lives back together.

For aspiring medical students that wish to become surgeons, Dr. Piasecki recommends they follow their heart and do what they love. “There are many fields out there to make a difference in people’s lives and if you love it, you are going to do it well, and when you do it well, you are going to make a difference,” he shared.
