Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, in an interview with SKAI TV on Wednesday, said that “there was no question of abolishing the tax-free allowance or increasing any tax rate,” adding that the government has proved this.

Responding to questions concerning the statements made by Bank of Greece governor Yannis Stournaras, who called for a scrapping of tax exemptions in order to increase revenues, he stressed that they were an “expression of opinion” and that Stournaras “has a very important role but he is not in the government”.

“He expresses his opinion, something that he has done many times. The truth is that Greece is a champion in the reduction of the debt as a proportion of GDP and we have reduced the taxes,” he said.

On the self-employed and the new tax rules, Marinakis said that the self-employed in Greece did not have an easy time of it, “especially in the period from 2015 and 2019 when the policy was to impose taxes,” adding that the government had acted to reduce the taxes.
