Miltiadis (Miltos) Tentoglou clinched the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games on Tuesday night, maintaining his title in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

With a jump of 8.48 m, Tentoglou is only the second long jump athlete to win consecutive gold medals following legendary Carl Lewis, who sustained his gold ranking in four consecutive Olympic Games, from 1984 to 1996. Tentoglou also holds the titles of World Champion and European Champion.

At the same time, Tentoglou is the first Greek track and field athlete to win consecutive gold medals at Olympic Games, and the first one in the 21st century, following Greek weightlifter Pyrros Dimas, who won three consecutive gold medals in Olympic Games between 1992 and 2000.

This is Greece’s first gold at the Olympic Games in Paris and the 7th medal overall in the same Games (including 1 silver, 5 bronze), with the country registering its 5th best performance in its history after the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 (16 medals), Sidney in 2000 (8), Atlanta in 1996 (13) and the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 (47).

Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock came second (silver) with 8.36 m, and Italy’s Mattia Furlani came third (bronze) with 8.34 m.
