Greek Culture & Sports Minister Lina Mendoni attended an event inaugurating development works at the Jordan River’s Baptismal Site of Jesus, a UNESCO monument of World Heritage.
At the King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre north of the Dead Sea, Jordan’s King Abdullah Hussein led the event attended by religious leaders throughout the world.
Mendoni met with her Jordanian counterpart Haifa Najjar, and agreed to sign a memorandum on preserving and promoting traditional music, instruments, and dances. The Greek minister also met with Tourism & Antiquities Minister Nayef Hmeidi Al-Fayez and discussed issues relating to museums, development of archaeological sites. The Jordanian minister requested technical know-how from greece relating to conservation, protection and promotion of cultural monuments found during large public works. Both agreed to sign a related memorandum.
Mendoni was also received by Princess Dana Firas, president of Petra National Trust and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, and both sides agreed to hold a seminar in Athens in 2023 for an exchange of know-how and experiences in protecting monuments from the climate crisis.
In addition, the Greek minister also met with Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and discussed the situation in the greater area, while he requested help in the restoration of a Byzantine church dated to the 6th century at Tell Mar Elias.
