MOBILITY WEEK: “Healthy and Safe with Sustainable Mobility”

Latest articles

“We are Healthy and Safe with Sustainable Mobility” is the central theme of European Mobility Week, which started twenty years ago and has been established as the EU’s most important institution for promoting Sustainable Urban Development.

The campaign is part of the pan-European goal of achieving climate neutrality and supports every local initiative to make cities safer, greener, more participatory and accessible to all.

This week proposes four key issues: mental & physical health, safety and tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim is to draw a very basic conclusion from the coronavirus pandemic, that the more gentle modes of movement increase, the more attractive to citizens and the more environmentally friendly cities become.

As stated by the Secretary General of Spatial Planning and Urban Environment of RIS, Efthymios Bakogiannis:

“The choice for this year’s theme pays tribute to the difficulties experienced by Europe and the whole world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also highlights the potential of this unprecedented health crisis in Europe. Cities and municipalities can resort to creative, resilient ways to deal with the pandemic. This year, VET celebrates the resilience and achievements of cities, while aiming to maintain this momentum. “Trends that started last year, such as increased active mobility and the use of low- or zero-emission mobility, need further promotion.”

As Mr. Bakoyannis pointed out, “RIS continues to support and promote this effort. We are and will be next to the municipalities for another year for another successful national campaign “.

Twenty years of European Mobility Week with “Virtual Museum”

The European Mobility Week takes place from 16 to 22 September and already 91 Greek cities have registered and started their program to raise awareness of citizens, civil society and the private initiative to choose sustainable modes of transport, such as walking and cycling. .

In recognition of the institution’s 20 years, EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK has created a “Virtual Museum”, which presents the history of the campaign, the impact it has achieved and its links to the wider priorities of the European Commission, such as the European Green Agreement . The museum also shares personal stories of behavior change, illustrating how the EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK has inspired people across Europe to adapt their mobility habits to the benefit of active mobility, public transport and other clean, smart transport solutions.
