NEW YORK, March 4, 2015 — The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York has announced that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was unanimously selected as the 2015 Greek Independence Day Parade Grand Marshal, in recognition of his steadfast support for Cyprus and the Greek National causes.
The President of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, Mr. Petros Galatoulas, noted, “Governor Andrew Cuomo has been a champion of our issues throughout his political service. He personifies our values and principles of freedom and democratic ideals, similar to those that helped Greece revolt and gain its independence from the Ottoman Empire. We are honored to have him with us on this very important day for us.”
This year marks the 77th year that the Greek Independence Day Parade will take place on New York’s Fifth Avenue, starting at 64th Street and continuing to 79th Street on Sunday, March 29, 2015, beginning at 2:00 p.m. More than 50 floats and bands, as well as 100,000 participants and spectators are expected to attend the parade, commemorating the 194th anniversary of Greece’s independence after 400 years of Turkish Ottoman rule on March 25, 1821.
