Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is due in Granada on Thursday to take part in the 3rd Summit of the European Political Community, with the participation of 47 European heads of state and government, at a time when Europe is discussing its strategic orientation and the enhancement of its geopolitical strength.

Along with the president of Switzerland, the prime minister will co-chair a panel on multilateralism as this relates to security and geostrategic issues. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, will participate in the same panel, as will the leaders of Finland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Ireland, Cyprus, Georgia.

On the sidelines of the summit, the prime minister will have meetings with the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili.

An informal European Council will follow on Friday in Granada.

The leaders’ discussion is expected to focus on the future of the EU (enlargement, in view of the December European Council) and the strategic agenda, on the resilience and competitiveness of the EU and on the priorities for the next period, while a discussion will also take place on migration.

As far as EU enlargement is concerned, Greece is in favour of this as an investment in the future.

With respect to natural disasters and adapting to climate change, these are seen as issues that should be included in the discussion on the revision of the Multiannual Financial Framework and the new architecture of the EU that is underway.

According to sources, this issue was raised by the prime minister in a letter addressed to the leaders of MED9, requesting coordination and joint action at the European Council, which is expected to take the form of a joint letter of the nine leaders addressed to the President of the European Council.
