President Sakellaropoulou visits Greek community’s premises, Cavafy’s tomb in Alexandria

President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the offices of the Greek community in Alexandria, where she was welcomed by President Andreas Vafeiadis in the presence of the Greek Community of Cairo President Christos Kavallis on Friday.

Sakellaropoulou was briefed on the issues concerning the Greek community, congratulating the presidents of the two communities who, despite adversities and challenges, exert tireless efforts to preserve and transmit the principles and values of Greek culture in Egypt. She emphasized that they belong to the most dynamic segments of the Greek diaspora and assured them that the Greek state will continue to steadfastly stand by their side.

Sakellaropoulou toured the historic Greek Square of Chatby and visited the Averofeio Greek School, the Library of the Greek Community and the nursing home “Manna.”

The president also visited the Greek Orthodox cemetery, where the tomb of the poet Constantine Cavafy and many Alexandrian benefactors are located. She laid a wreath at the monument of the Greek Air Force officers who died in the Middle East during World War II.

The Greek president was accompanied by Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.

Sakellaropoulou traveled to Alexandria to inaugurate the renovated Cavafy House, following an invitation by the president of the Onassis Foundation Antonis Papadimitriou.
