By Dr. Anastasios Koularmanis, Director of Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

If you are considering enrolling your child in one of our Greek-American Day Schools, you may be wondering what the long-term advantages of such an education may be.

Deciding to send your child to one of our Greek parochial schools has many benefits that are not just religious in nature. There are academic, social, and emotional benefits that come with attending one of our Greek schools.  Our schools concentrate on the whole child, not just academics.

Many of us are disappointed that our children today are not getting the same education we did growing up. It is not difficult to see that changes in our society have erased some of the fundamental values that we grew up with. Fortunately, a Greek school still has the freedom to teach those religious and moral values we were taught in school and at home. Parents who want their children to embrace their Greek faith and traditions will appreciate a school where these ideas are incorporated in the curriculum every day.

The primary reasons that parents choose a Greek Orthodox parochial school are:

  1. An excellent education
  2. A supportive, safe environment
  3. Teaching of Christian Orthodox values
  4. Lifelong relationships

 A Greek Orthodox education means…

A rigorous curriculum – Our schools offer STEAM, mathematics, history, English, science, Greek language, Greek culture, athletics, fine arts, and religion.

Faith centered– The goal of a Greek Orthodox education is to help children mature into exemplary citizens. The religious formation of children starts at home and continues in school.

High expectations – Our teachers encourage every student to work hard so that they can reach and surpass their own personal goals.

Self-discipline – All of the students that attend our schools are taught to accept responsibility for their actions, and to respect others.

Devoted parents – Parents are a child’s first teachers. In our schools, parents take an active role in their children’s education. The school supports families and works with them, to ensure that all students receive a quality education.

The best way to know if a Greek school is right for your child is to schedule a visit. I am sure that once you visit one of our schools, you’ll see all the benefits that a Greek school can offer your child.
