The longer I remain in Cyprus the longer I come to recognize there is no much hope for this beautiful little island of becoming the Switzerland of the Med. It has the possibility of becoming one but not the spirit; it’s cocooned deep within its own demons!

 

Rather than taking risks to aim for the sky, most people prefer to abandon meritocracy and use connections and favouritism as a way forward! The political parties in Cyprus for years have cultivated such a mentality and those ugly results are obvious today!

 

The Mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos is becoming a citizen role model for many decent people and so is the Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides. They both share the drive and honesty to fight institutional corruption; a corruption that has destroyed the island and society itself!

The Rule of Law and Transparency is finally held above powerful wealthy individuals and institutions but also above political influence to face the long arm of the law with incarceration. To the dismay of some, they are making good progress cleaning the stench of so many stables.

 

Where the government has failed – or did not care – they are unearthing massive cases of dishonesty and in so doing, encouraging citizens to break the silence of apathy and complicity. This is a Revolution!

 

Toady it’s a good day to be alive and be a part of this new Revolution of the Mind that fights illegalities and injustice! My respect goes to both Fedonas and Odysseas! I hope one of them will become the next President of Cyprus (if willing) without the constraints of Kommatokratia but remain free individuals with free minds.  As a concerned citizen, they have my vote and I am sure thousands of others will also do so. Honesty it’s a wonderful infliction only a few can resist…that’s how I feel today!
