Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni referred to the future of the women’s representation in politics as well as the improvement of the institutions and operation mechanism of democracy with the equal, independent of sex, participation.

Kefalogianni addressed on Wednesday the two-day WPL Summit 2024 held in Athens.
Kefalogianni, former WPL Ambassador to Greece (2020-2023), held a key role in the event as after the invitation of WPL president Silvana Koch-Mehrin, assumed the organisation of the Summit of “Women Political Leaders Athens Summit 2024” in Athens.

“After two and a half thousand years, the political and social system inspired by the Athenians, Democracy, continues to exist and develops,” pointed out Olga Kefalogianni, adding that “in this system women were not included. Their role was extremely restricted. We remained politically invisible for centuries until the Enlightenment and the industrial revolution…”

Kefalogianni described that gradual development of the women’s participation in politics noting that “Today we are here…Women politicians from 57 countries. Women of the 21st century with claims, courage and will to offer to our societies”.

Addressing the delegates, Kefalogianni expressed her certainty that “the discussions will highlight the issues of AI in the equal politics of the future, any kind of violence against women politicians and the parties’ stance as factors of democracy.”

The Summit is taking place at the NJV Plaza Hotel in Athens and includes 6 panels and speeches with emphasis on the networking between women politicians.
The President of the Hellenic Democracy Katerina Sakellaropoulou will be awarded as the first Greek that become President of the Hellenic Republic.

The Summit is held under the auspices of the President of Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou with co-organisers the Tourism Minister, the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family and the contribution of the Region of Attica.
