Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Giorgos Kotsiras addressed a special event held in Athens on Tuesday to mark the 78th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Representing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the minister highlighted what he called Greece’s active and substantial participation in the United Nations towards maintaining world peace and security. All the principles that the UN represents also serve as “the navigation compass of Greece’s foreign policy”, he added. This is the context in which Greece is seeking a position as elected member of the UN Security Council for 2025-26, Kotsiras noted.
The minister also noted Greece’s readiness to contribute to peace initiatives for the Middle East, as Greece “promotes dialogue and cooperation as a counterweight before serious threats of a broader regional escalation.”
In addition, Kotsiras also called for the immediate release of hostages by Hamas and the provision of humanitarian aid for all civilians.
At the start of the event earlier in the day, which was organized by Attica Region and the UN, the UN flag was raised at the Acropolis and wreaths were laid at the Uknown Soldier monument.
