The Hellenic News of America and Hermes Expo International are proud to announce that Vasiliki Filiotis will be honored at the 33rd Annual Hermes Expo Awards Dinner Gala on June 19th at the Grand Marquis in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Vasiliki Filiotis will be receiving the prestigious PAIDEIA Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to Greek education and her dedication to the Greek-American community.

Vasiliki Filiotis, a distinguished educator and leader, began her career after graduating from the Arsakeio Pedagogical Academy of Patras in 1957. She taught in both private and public schools in Greece before moving to New York in 1967. In New York, she continued her teaching career at various Greek schools, including the Dormition of the Theotokos “Sotirios Ellinas” in Brooklyn, the Transfiguration of Christ in Corona, and the Annunciation in Manhattan. Her dedication and love for education were particularly evident at St. Irene Chrysovalantou, where she served as a teacher and principal from 1975 to 2017.

Continuing her education, Vasiliki earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from Queens College, New York, as well as an interdisciplinary degree in Philosophy and Political Science. She achieved Dean’s List recognition and received an award in Philosophy. She also attended courses in Pedagogy and Psychology at Columbia University and pursued a Ph.D. in Political Science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Throughout her career, Vasiliki has been honored by numerous prestigious institutions, including the United States Congress, the New York State Assembly, the Council of Hellenes Abroad, Hermes Expo, the Federation of Greek Teachers, St. Irene Chrysovalantou, the Association of Greek Teachers “Prometheus,” the Greek Department of St. John’s University, and Hellas FM. Her published works span Philosophy, Political Science, Pedagogy, and Religious Education for young students.

Vasiliki has played a significant role in various organizations, serving as president of the Organization of European Americans and the Association of Greek Teachers “Prometheus” from 2009 to 2013. She was a founding member of the Federation of Greek Teachers of America and the “Odysseas Elytis” Chair of Modern Greek Studies at Rutgers University. Her contributions have been recognized with honors for her donations and efforts in preserving cultural heritage, including the Kostis Palamas house in Patras, now a Museum of Culture.
