Minister of Migration and Asylum Notis Mitarachi, attending the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Brussels on Thursday, stressed the need for an agreement on a new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, as well as on the protection of the external borders of the EU.
“It is becoming clear that Europe needs to take greater action to tackle irregular arrivals. We need to protect the external borders of the European Union, work more closely with transit countries to make sure that there are no departures of undocumented migrants, so as to prevent the loss of life, a phenomenon that was on the rise in 2022,” Mitarachi said and added:
“We must agree on a new Pact. And what is crucial for the new Pact is to agree a fair solidarity mechanism. Three years now we have not made sufficient progress, I hope today there will be some steps forward.”
