The Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Sofia Zacharaki, received UNICEF’s diplomatic representative to Greece, Dr. Ghassan Khalil.
Zacharaki praised the work of the organization, focusing on the development of future collaborations and actions between the ministry and UNICEF and stressing the need to protect and enhance the position of children in society.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of de-institutionalization, but also of strengthening the institution of the family as a means of preventing the separation of children from their families.
Emphasis was also placed on interventions and programmes aimed at familiarizing children with their rights from an early age, while they jointly mentioned the need to address learning difficulties and the socialization of children at preschool age.
Finally, they agreed to sign a memorandum of cooperation, which will form the basis for policies in practice always aimed at the protection and development of the child.
