Congresswoman Maloney Marks 46 Years Since Turkey’s Illegal Invasion of Cyprus

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), co-chair and co-founder of the House Hellenic Caucus, today joined the American Hellenic Institute to commemorate the 46th anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion of Cyprus. Following the event, the Congresswoman released the below statement.

“Forty-six years ago, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus forced thousands of Greek Cypriots to leave their homes and become refugees in their own country. Religious and cultural sites were damaged and destroyed, families displaced, and lives stolen. Those who were forced out of their homes still have not been able to return home or even worse, recover the remains of their loved ones.

“To this day, more than 40,000 soldiers remain on the island, an unacceptable military presence that Cypriots have been subjected to for nearly five decades. Turkey must withdraw its troops from Cyprus and end its illegal occupation so that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can live together in peace, security, and prosperity. A stable and reunified Cyprus benefits the United States, the entire Eastern Mediterranean, and most of all Cypriots themselves, who deserve to live without the looming presence of the Turkish military.

“As co-chair and co-founder of the Hellenic Caucus, I remain committed to strengthening the United States’ alliance with Cyprus and supporting efforts in Congress to defend its stability and sovereignty. Since the Caucus was formed, we have been successful in preventing any legislation from passing Congress that would undermine our relationship with Greece or Cyprus. I am proud to work with my colleagues in Congress and my friends in the community to preserve and strengthen our relations with Greece and Cyprus, and defend them from external threats.
