UPLAND, Pa.— The Electroencephalogram (EEG) Laboratory at Crozer-Chester Medical Center recently received its five-year reaccreditation from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET), the major national accrediting body for such labs. This is the EEG lab’s third five-year accreditation.
ABRET’s lab accreditation process evaluates technical standards, the quality of the laboratory’s output, and lab management issues. Successful accreditation means the EEG laboratory at Crozer-Chester Medical Center has met strict national standards. Patients and doctors can feel confident that they will receive quality diagnostic care.
The accreditation process is extremely rigorous. The lab is required to submit EEG tests for three specific patients from a randomly assigned date and time over the course of a five-year audit period. Those tests are evaluated by ABRET and are required to meet all best-practice standards set forth by the testing protocol.
Pasquale Brancazio, D.O., Crozer-Keystone neurologist and medical director of the EEG lab, states, “I’m very proud of this accomplishment. It’s not an easy task, and it shows that Crozer-Chester Medical Center is doing an excellent job at meeting or exceeding standards.”
“Not only does this reaccreditation demonstrate excellence in the field of EEG testing, but it also means the lab meets the highest standards for CPR training, licensing and credentialing of staff as well as infection control best practices for staff, the lab and testing equipment,” adds Margie Dieter-Murphy, clinical director of the Clinical Neurophysiology labs for Crozer-Keystone Health System.
EEG testing uses electrode discs connected to the scalp to measure electrical brain waves. The reading from an EEG can be used to test the brain’s electrical response to different stimuli, or to visualize the electric pattern during certain activities, such as sleeping.
EEG is used to evaluate epilepsy, tumors, stroke, concussive syndrome, sleep disorders and other neurological diseases. Pediatric EEG tests for newborn seizures and other neurological conditions in the pediatric and newborn population.
The Electroencephalogram Laboratory at Crozer-Chester Medical Center is now credentialed until the year 2022.
