Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at JFK University Medical Center announced today the appointment of Brian Jankowitz, MD, as Co-Director of JFK University Medical Center’s Stroke and Neurovascular Center. Dr. Jankowitz is a leading U.S. neurosurgeon who joins JFK University Medical Center from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as division head of cerebrovascular surgery and associate professor of neurosurgery, since 2021.

Dr. Jankowitz has more than 20 years of clinical and academic experience in neurosurgery. He has been affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and the University of Pennsylvania, having run the cerebrovascular center at the latter two institutions. He is widely known for his expertise in acute neurological disorders, mainly focusing on hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jankowitz to the Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at JFK University Medical Center as the head of our Cerebrovascular Service line,” said Amie Thornton, president, chief hospital executive, “His outstanding record of accomplishments and leadership in the field of neurosurgery for patients with complex stroke are noteworthy and unparalleled. He will contribute greatly to our record of clinical excellence in neurosurgery.”

“It’s an honor for me to continue my service in neurosurgery at JFK University Medical Center,” said Dr. Jankowitz. “My passion in medicine has always been neurosurgery, and I am humbled by the chance to help the people who depend on JFK for their critical care needs.”

Dr. Jankowitz completed Neurological Surgery Residency and NeuroEndovascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine and is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he studied biology.

He holds memberships in various professional and scientific societies, including the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society, the American Heart Association Stroke Council, the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, among others. He holds specialty board certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and The Society of Neurological Surgeons, subspecialty in Neuro Endovascular Surgery.

In addition, Dr. Jankowitz holds editorial positions or has been a reviewer for more than a dozen prestigious peer-reviewed academic journals. He also is the author or coauthor of well over 100 research publications in peer-reviewed journals, in print or other media, and he has given dozens of guest lectures on the latest topics in neurosurgery and research related to the field.
