Family Screening Will Show Sunday, September 15 at Museum of the Moving Image

Astoria, NY – September 4, 2024 – The Hellenic Film Society (HFS) is proud to present its first-ever family programming with Karagiozis: The Movie. Karagiozis is a popular shadow-puppet character in Greek folklore and tradition, known for his comedic and satirical performances. The film is the first Greek animated feature ever made. It will be shown on Sunday, September 15 at 3pm at the Museum of the Moving Image.

Karagiozis, aimed at school-age children, uses vivid visual imagery to tell an entertaining story that’s funny, and easy for kids to follow. The story underscores how a positive attitude can help people overcome difficulties and be carefree. Music plays a big role in the film, incorporating a combination of traditional Greek songs and original uplifting tunes. The film, directed by Akis Karras, Christos Leivaditis, and Ekaterini Papageorgiou, is in Greek with English subtitles.

“We have wanted to include children’s films in our Society’s programming for quite a while and we are delighted to present this family-friendly film that all generations can enjoy. It also reinforces the Greek language and introduces Greek cinema to a new generation,” says Maria C. Miles, Hellenic Film Society president. “Kids will enjoy the animation and the humor, while parents and grandparents will appreciate the artistic Greek tradition of the Karagiozis character. Watching this film as a family is a fun way to begin the new
school year, and a terrific way for us to kick off the New York Greek Film Expo, which will take place next month.”

For further information or to purchase tickets to Karagiozis, please visit www.hellenicfilmusa.org and follow on Facebook and Instagram. The Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue in Astoria, is conveniently located near public transportation.
The screening is part of Always on Sunday, the Greek film series presented monthly by the Hellenic Film Society at the Museum of the Moving Image.
