Greece is stronger than ever, both economically and diplomatically and this was reflected by the European Union’s immediate response during the meeting between the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Strasbourg, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said in a press briefing on Thursday.
“Funds of 2.25 billion euros are expected to be used to restore the affected areas,” he noted, and explained that the government is clear on the issue of prices and will not allow profiteering in the flood-affected areas.
Marinakis also announced that a meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in New York will take place on September 20, as part of his visit to the US for the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly.
As for the repercussions of Storm ‘Daniel’ in Thessaly, he said processes were underway to record the damage, conduct autopsies, remove the dead animals, restore the electricity supply, check water quality, manage waste, and to hand out relief and supplies to the citizens in the affected areas.
In addition, he said that once the amount of damage is recorded, Greece will request additional money from the agricultural reserve and the EU Solidarity Fund, which can give Greece up to 400 million euros.
