Temple Obesity Researcher Honored by Society of General Internal Medicine
(Philadelphia, PA) – Sharon J. Herring, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Public Health and Ob/Gyn at Temple University School of Medicine, and physician in the Section of General Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital, is the 2013 recipient of the Mid-Atlantic Society of General Internal Medicine’s (SGIM) Clinician Investigator Award. Dr. Herring received the award at the Mid-Atlantic SGIM regional meeting on March 1 in Philadelphia.
The Clinician Investigator Award recognizes outstanding Junior Clinician Investigators who have displayed innovation and excellence in research and/or policy development. SGIM cited Dr. Herring’s strong research track record in selecting her for the award.
“I am so honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Herring. “I owe a great debt of gratitude to my colleagues and patients at Temple who have supported and inspired my research.”
Dr. Herring’s primary research focus is obesity treatment and prevention in women. Her lines of investigation have included: identifying psychological, behavioral, and social-contextual determinants of weight change among women during and after pregnancy; developing, implementing, and then evaluating electronically-mediated, behavioral weight control interventions; and exploring physician counseling about nutrition and weight control.
“Dr. Herring is extremely deserving of this honor,” said Anuradha Paranjape, MD, MPH, FACP, Chief of General Internal Medicine at Temple University Hospital. “Her intellect, character, and stellar research skills place her among the top young investigators I have encountered.”
Dr. Herring has published more than a dozen original research articles, and received multiple national grants for her research. She has been a member of SGIM since 2003 and has served as Co-Director of the SGIM obesity interest group since 2005. Dr. Herring is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine.
