Women’s world heavyweight champ, Sonya Lamonakis, is getting fired up for a July 4th match in St. Maarten. Lamonakis (10-1-2) is set to face off against Gwendolyn O’neal (18-7) in the bout.
At stake is the UBF heavyweight title. Winning would give the champ possession of both the IBO and UBF belts–quite an achievement for a fighter who is also professionally accomplished as a New York City public school teacher.
Lamonakis was originally scheduled to fight for the belt on May 30th, but the entire card fell apart at the last minute. “I’ll be fighting an 8 division world champion who’s got a lot more experience. She hasn’t fought in about 3 years so she’s been pretty much stagnant,” she told Brooklynfights.com.
