As we reflect on the past year, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s Department of Greek Education has made significant strides in its mission to promote, preserve, and grow Greek schools and programs within the Archdiocese. Our commitment to educational excellence continues to advance the faith, language, and culture of the Greek Orthodox community.
Major Initiatives and Projects
This year saw the successful release of “Οι Ρίζες µου” (“My Roots”), a culturally significant English translation published in April 2024 that enhances access to our rich heritage. Additionally, we streamlined access to educational resources by transferring all Greek language materials to the Orthodox Marketplace, fostering broader dissemination for educational outreach.
On March 23rd, the Department of Greek Education held the Students Award of Excellence Ceremony at the Patrides Cultural Center, honoring 47 parochial school students from NY, NJ, and CT for their outstanding performance in the 2023 Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek. This examination, approved by the New York State Education Department as a 4+1 World Language pathway assessment, was administered to approximately 400 students from various schools on June 24th, 2024.
The department also participated in the recent 2024 Clergy-Laity Congress, presenting a comprehensive overview of its programs, upcoming events, and webinars. They highlighted the positive impact of SNF grants on various parishes across the country and encouraged those interested in enhancing their parish Greek language programs to join the discussions.
This past summer, our department successfully hosted a training program in collaboration with the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus for Greek-American educators. The program provided 14 teachers with valuable insights into the Greek language and teaching methodologies, complemented by cultural immersion through visits to historical sites. We are excited to announce that we will host this initiative again in Summer 2025, continuing our commitment to support Greek-American educators in promoting and preserving Greek language and culture within their communities.
In a significant step forward, the department participated in a landmark meeting with the Greek Ministry of Education, marking the first time a director from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America was invited. This meeting facilitated discussions on the challenges of preserving Greek language and culture in the U.S., with Deputy Minister of Education, Religion, and Sport, Mrs. Zetta M. Makri, emphasizing her support for Greek teachers abroad. The conversations aimed at enhancing collaboration to ensure the effective operation of Greek education programs and included discussions about future partnerships to promote Greek education.

One of our recent activities was the visit by the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis to Greek American schools from October 21-23, 2024. This event celebrated our cultural heritage and allowed students to engage with the works of Kazantzakis by showcasing projects and participating in discussions about his life.
We are also pleased to announce our upcoming in-person annual Greek Education Conference on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM EST, hosted by the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church community in Whitestone, NY. This conference will enhance the skills and knowledge of educators from both Day and Afternoon schools, featuring a key presentation by esteemed educator Mrs. Angeliki Mastrochimahalaki, who will focus on promoting literacy and effective strategies for teaching Greek language and culture. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Holy Cross Community for hosting this important event and encourage all educators to participate.
Lastly, we are excited to announce that our Online Adult Greek Classes, offered through the Academy of Science and Letters of Pontians, will begin again on November 1st, 2024. Last year, we had over 250 applicants, and this year we’ve already received nearly 150 applications, demonstrating strong interest in the program.
We also look forward to the launch of a comprehensive Byzantine History Text in Fall 2024, designed to enhance our educational curricula with an in-depth exploration of Byzantine civilization.

Professional Development
The department has prioritized professional development through a variety of educational initiatives. Our online webinars have provided vital support for the implementation of our new language framework, with expert speakers presenting on various aspects of Greek education. Monthly sessions have drawn participants from across the nation, fostering a community of learning.
Partnerships
Strategic partnerships have been vital to our mission. Collaborations with esteemed institutions such as the Democritus University of Thrace, the University of Western Macedonia, Simon Fraser University, Greek123, and Ellinopoula have significantly enhanced our capacity to support parish schools and programs. These alliances are essential to driving our commitment to educational excellence and the preservation of our faith, language, and culture. Commitment to Excellence
As we close the chapter on 2024, the Office of the Director of Greek Education reaffirms its dedication to promoting, preserving, and growing all Greek schools within the Archdiocese. Our ongoing efforts to develop programs of educational excellence ensure that the legacy of Greek heritage will thrive for future generations.
We look forward to another year of growth, learning, and cultural enrichment as we continue to empower our communities and uphold the values central to our faith and heritage.
