In Memory of Dr. Sotirios J. Vahaviolos (1946–2025)
Dr. Sotirios J. Vahaviolos passed away peacefully at his home in Princeton, New Jersey, on February 6, 2025, at the age of 78. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Aspasia Felice (Nessas) Vahaviolos.
Early Life and Greek Heritage
Born on April 16, 1946, in Mystras, Greece, to Ioannis and Athanasia Vahaviolos, Sotirios grew up immersed in the warmth of a large, loving family. His childhood in Mystras was marked by memorable adventures, diligent studies by candlelight, and nurturing the family’s olive and fruit trees—a true reflection of his deep-rooted Greek heritage. His early work as an apprentice in his father’s butcher shop instilled in him a strong work ethic that would support his later academic achievements.
Academic Excellence and Professional Journey
After moving to the United States, Sotirios pursued his passion for learning with remarkable dedication. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University—graduating at the top of his class—and went on to earn M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Philosophy, followed by a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University. His academic prowess paved the way for a groundbreaking career in the fields of Acoustic Emission and Non-Destructive Testing.
A Trailblazing Career in Engineering and Innovation
Sotirios began his career at Bell Labs, where his innovative spirit and technical expertise set him apart. In 1978, he founded Physical Acoustics Corporation, which later evolved into the renowned MISTRAS Group, Inc. Under his visionary leadership, the company went public on the NYSE in 2009. Dr. Vahaviolos was a revered scientist and pioneer, transforming theoretical concepts into practical, industry-changing solutions. His work significantly impacted sectors such as Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Transportation, and Infrastructure, and his contributions are celebrated by professional organizations including IEEE, ASNT, AEWG, and NDT Academia International.
A Life Devoted to Family and Community
Sotirios met his wife, Aspasia Felice (Nessas), at a Greek community event when they were just 21 and 19 years old, respectively. Together, they built a life centered on love, tradition, and the nurturing of their daughters—Athanasia, Stephanie, and Kristy—in West Windsor and later Princeton, New Jersey. Family summer vacations in Greece were a cherished tradition, as Sotirios hoped to instill in his children a lifelong love for their Greek roots.
He valued the simple pleasures in life: lively family gatherings, shared meals, and the joy of watching his daughters, nephew, and grandchildren flourish. His commitment to hard work and maintaining a strong connection to his heritage left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Dedication to the Greek Community
Deeply proud of his Greek heritage, Dr. Vahaviolos remained actively involved in the Hellenic community. He served as President of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Hamilton, NJ, and was honored as an “Archon” of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle of the Holy Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. His involvement extended into Greek politics, where he was chosen for an honorary position on the at-large ballot for the New Democracy party in 2012. His commitment to supporting and giving back to fellow Greeks and Greek-Americans was a cornerstone of his life.
Family Legacy
Dr. Sotirios J. Vahaviolos is survived by his children: Athanasia Tia (Nikolaos Koufakis) Vahaviolos, Stephanie Vahaviolos (Michael) Foglia, and Kristy Vahaviolos (Georgios) Kyriakopoulos; his nephew, Dimitri Nessas; his sister, Stavroula Xenofanes; and his grandchildren, Alexander, Maya, Alana, Melina, Peter, Nicholas Sotirios, and Georgios Panagiotis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ioannis and Athanasia Vahaviolos, and his brother, Apostolis Vahaviolos. His memory and achievements will continue to inspire his family, colleagues, and the broader community.
