Washington, DC – The Make-A-Wish Ball 2024 in Washington, DC, held on February 22, was a star-studded event that raised an impressive $1.5 million to grant wishes for children battling critical illnesses. The event brought together celebrity guests, Greek-American business leaders, and diplomats, reinforcing the power of philanthropy. Among the distinguished attendees were Linda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, who joined former Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Board Chair Mike Manatos in celebrating the incredible generosity of donors.

This year’s Make-A-Wish Ball set a fundraising record, thanks to the leadership of Greek-American sisters Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis Berman, co-founders of Georgetown Cupcake and stars of TLC’s DC Cupcakes. As Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Board Members, the sisters served as co-chairs of the event, playing a pivotal role in its success.

Greek and Cypriot diplomatic leaders also stepped up for the cause. Greece’s Ambassador to the U.S., Ekaterini Nassika, and Cyprus’ Ambassador to the U.S., Evangelos Savva, both longtime supporters of Make-A-Wish, helped raise thousands of dollars by auctioning exclusive dinners for 10 at their ambassadorial residences. Their contributions highlighted the Greek diaspora’s commitment to philanthropy and community engagement.

The Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Board has a strong tradition of Greek-American leadership. When Mike Manatos stepped down as Board Chair in 2022, he was succeeded by fellow Greek-American Jason Pappas, who continues to lead efforts to expand the reach of Make-A-Wish programs. Pappas, a longtime supporter of the organization, shares a unique history with Manatos, having once been GOYA Basketball competitors, showcasing the enduring bonds of the Greek-American community in philanthropy.
The Make-A-Wish Ball 2024 underscored the power of generosity, leadership, and community involvement. As Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic continues to grant life-changing wishes for children, this event reaffirmed dedicated individuals and organizations’ impact on young lives.
