BOSTON, MA / WEST HARTFORD, CT – August 9, 2025 — The Greek-American community proudly celebrates Dr. Demetrios Giannaros ’72, a distinguished public servant, educator, and advocate for Hellenism, who will be inducted into the 2025 Immigrant Heritage Hall of Fame on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, Connecticut.
Born in Greece and immigrating to the United States to pursue higher education, Dr. Giannaros made history as the first foreign-born Deputy Speaker in the Connecticut General Assembly, where he also served as Deputy Majority Leader during his 16-year legislative career (1995–2011). A steadfast voice for education, innovation, and international cooperation, he chaired the Education and Energy & Technology Committees, served as Vice Chair of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, and was a member of the International Trade Commission.
Deeply committed to the global Greek diaspora, Dr. Giannaros served as President of the World Hellenic Interparliamentary Association, strengthening bonds among Hellenic legislators worldwide. He co-founded and presided over the National Immigrant Heritage Center, which administers the Immigrant Heritage Hall of Fame, and led the Connecticut Invention Convention, inspiring young students to innovate.
Internationally, he directed the U.S. Consortium for Management Education in Central and Eastern Europe, helping transition economies establish Western-style business schools and leadership programs.
Dr. Giannaros holds a PhD in Economics along with master’s degrees in Political Economy and Economic Development. His accomplishments reflect the enduring values of the Hellenic spirit, philotimo, education, civic duty, and perseverance.
The 2025 Induction Gala will honor Dr. Giannaros alongside three other outstanding immigrant heritage leaders:
- Dr. Ali Antar, Emeritus Professor of Physics and interfaith leader
- Atty. Dana Bucin, immigration attorney and humanitarian
- Homa Naficy, creator of “The American Place” refugee and immigrant support program
