From Antioch, Illinois to the Big Ten
At just 22 years old, Athan Kaliakmanis has risen to one of the most challenging positions in college sports: starting quarterback for Rutgers University. His journey reflects not just athletic skill, but the values of perseverance, humility, and faith instilled in him through his family’s immigrant story.
A Family Legacy Rooted in Greece and Beyond
Athan’s father’s side of the family hails from Patras, Greece. His grandparents immigrated to New Jersey in the 1960s, working in the restaurant business before eventually settling in Illinois. His parents, both born in New Jersey, carried forward that ethic of hard work and resilience.
On his mother’s side, Athan also honors his Ukrainian and Irish heritage, embracing a diverse cultural background that enriches his perspective. Together, these traditions ground him and inspire the pride he carries every time he steps on the field.
“It’s honestly awesome being able to represent the Greek community. I love everything about being Greek, the way we connect, the way we support each other. It’s something I take to heart.”
Grounded in Faith
College football brought challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-reflection but it also deepened Athan’s spiritual foundation. His Christian faith became central to his growth as an athlete and as a man.
“My relationship with God has grown so much in college. I’ve learned to be humble, grounded, and to live in the present.”
That faith, combined with discipline and gratitude, shapes the way he leads his team and faces the pressures of Division 1 competition.
A Leader with Big Dreams
On the field, Athan is focused on leading Rutgers with confidence and integrity. Off the field, he works to balance academics, training, and personal growth. He dreams of one day reaching the NFL, though he is quick to remind himself to focus on the present moment and the daily work that makes future opportunities possible.
Why Support Matters
Athan is quick to point out that no athlete succeeds alone. From his family’s sacrifices to the unwavering support of the Greek-American community, he understands the power of people rallying behind him. He remembers vividly the sight of Greek flags waving at his first Rutgers game, a visible reminder that his achievements are shared by many.
That is why he values organizations like Scarlet Assets Management Company (SAMCO). SAMCO plays a vital role in supporting student-athletes like Athan both on and off the field. As the official partnership management for Rutgers Athletics and student-athlete brand collaborations, SAMCO works to build meaningful connections between businesses and the University. From sponsorships to local partnerships across a wide variety of different businesses, SAMCO ensures that every opportunity aligns with the values of the university while supporting our student-athletes.
Through RNIL (Rutgers, Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities, student-athletes can now benefit from partnerships that recognize their influence and impact. Whether it’s promoting a local business, launching a joint campaign, or building long-term brand relationships, these collaborations allow athletes to explore entrepreneurship while pursuing their education and sport. Businesses that are looking to make a difference and make a mark with Rutgers can connect with SAMCO to invest not only in marketing for their business, but in the future of young leaders like Athan. His message to leaders is clear: your support has the power to shape futures.
Inspiring the Next Generation
To young Greek-Americans and all aspiring athletes, Athan offers simple but powerful advice: don’t ever give up. Challenges will come, he says, but perseverance and faith will carry you through. “Pain is temporary and glory lasts forever.”
From his grandparents’ restaurant beginnings in New Jersey to leading Rutgers football under the Saturday lights, Athan Kaliakmanis embodies the Greek-American spirit of resilience, faith, and possibility. His story is more than sports, it’s a call to action: for businesses to partner with SAMCO, for communities to rally around their athletes, and for young people to believe that with God, perseverance, and support, dreams truly are within reach.
