Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos met with the leader of the European Peoples Party (EPP) parliamentary group Manfred Weber.
According to an announcement, the minister referred to the recent developmnents in Ukraine and underlined that Greece condemns the Russian invasion, which constitutes a blatant violation of international law.
He said that the developments in Ukraine demand initiatives in the field of defence and security for the strengthening of the EU’s resilience and strategic autonomy and, in this context, he welcomed that EU member-states’ intention to increase their defence spending.
On the Strategic Compass for the EU, which will shortly be adopted, he said that it should clearly reflect the conditions created by the Russian invasion and all the challenges and threats to security that the EU is facing, according to the Threat Analysis.
The role of Greece as a pillar of stability and security for the European Union, NATO and the wider region of Southeastern Mediterranean was highlighted at the meeting.
