President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou was on Sunday awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of the Environment at the Ionian University, in a ceremony held at the university.
In her acceptance speech, the president highlighted the great contribution of the Ionian islands to the Greek arts and letters and said her own interest in environmental issues dated back to her career as a judge.
She also referred to the island of Zakynthos, which houses the university’s environmental department, noting that it was home to the habitats of rare and protected sea creatures, such as the Caretta caretta turtles and Mediterranean seal, which had been designated NATURA areas.
