Officer Mikalonis, 29, was shot in the head and has been hospitalized in critical condition since Monday.
A 20-year-old suspect identified as Edgar Samaniego has been taken into custody and is ordered detained without bail as reported by Fox 5 in Las Vegas.
Mikalonis has undergone successful surgery on Wednesday morning to remove the bullet. He remains in critical condition and according to Las Vegas Police Protective Association President Steve Grammas, there was some encouraging news.
As stated in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Grammas stated “They successfully removed the bullet from his neck,” Grammas said. “His blood pressure is getting better. He is still alive and he is fighting.”
Crowds have gathered outside of the University Medical Center as an outpour of support and love for Officer Mikalonis.
