The 82th anniversary of the blowing up of Gorgopotamos Bridge, interrupting Germany’s railway supply line between Athens and Thessaloniki in World War II, and the anniversary of National Resistance was commemorated at an event held by the Region of Central Greece and the Municipality of Lamia on Sunday.
Representing the government at the Central Greece ceremony, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras called the historical event “a leading act of united national resistance” and “one of the brightest acts in the struggle for liberation.” Today, he said, Greece acts within a particularly fluid environment and faces challenges of a different kind: economic, energy, geopolitical, and social. “Our goal is a homeland that is secure, strong, self-confident, and playing a leading role in peace in the East Mediterranean,” he underlined.
Ruling New Democracy Deputy Yiannis Economou, representing the Greek Parliament, said that a small country like occupied Greece sent a very strong message that had “a strategic repercussion greatly affecting the development of war events in the Southeast Mediterranean and North Africa.” The event is a constant reminder of the priority the nation has, he added, as Greece is a nation that can rise above all challenges united, especially at critical times.
Plefsi Eleftherias leader Zoe Konstantopoulou urged the government to take the initiative in demanding war reparations from Germany. Stefanos Kasselakis, leader of the new party Movement for Democracy, attended and laid a wreath. Others attending included SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Deputy Yiannis Sarakiotis, with the party’s address at the event delivered by a local party member.
