Chicago, IL – April 6, 2025 – The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is pleased to announce the dedication of the Mariyana T. Spyropoulos Disinfection Facility at the O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). The ceremony will take place on Friday, April 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the O’Brien WRP, located at 3500 Howard Street, Skokie, IL.
This dedication honors the legacy of Mariyana T. Spyropoulos, former MWRD President and Commissioner, in recognition of her exceptional service to the MWRD and the Greater Chicago community. The MWRD Board of Commissioners formally approved the naming of the disinfection facility at their November 21, 2024 meeting.
Commissioner Spyropoulos served on the MWRD Board for more than 15 years, advocating for fiscal responsibility, transparency, and environmentally progressive policies. She was instrumental in key initiatives, such as the establishment of an inspector general, the broadcasting of Board meetings, and the development of a water pollution reporting app. Among her most notable achievements was her leadership in supporting the introduction of wastewater disinfection, an essential layer of treatment to safeguard public health and protect the environment.
First appointed in 2009 and elected in 2010, 2016, and 2022, Commissioner Spyropoulos also served in prominent roles, including Chairman of Finance from 2013 to 2015 and President of the MWRD Board of Commissioners from 2015 to 2019. She concluded her tenure at the MWRD in November 2024 after being elected as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
The dedication of the Mariyana T. Spyropoulos Disinfection Facility serves as a lasting tribute to her dedication, leadership, and the legacy she leaves in advancing the mission of the MWRD. This facility represents a significant achievement in improving the wastewater treatment process and promoting sustainable practices for the region.
The public is invited to attend this ceremony to honor Commissioner Spyropoulos and celebrate her contributions to the MWRD and the environment.
