New York, NY — The Pancyprian Association of America proudly concludes its 50th anniversary year, reflecting on five decades of advocacy, cultural preservation, athletic achievement, and community engagement rooted in the mission established at its founding in 1975: to promote and project the ongoing struggle of the Greek Cypriot people for Freedom and Justice.
Since its inception, the Association’s divisions, Athletic, Cultural, Women’s, and Eleftheria Youth, have devoted countless hours, resources, and unwavering dedication to advancing this mission. Their work continues to honor the legacy of Cyprus, its history, and its people, ensuring that the pursuit of Freedom, Human Rights, and Democratic values remains at the forefront.
Although 51 years have passed since the illegal and tragic invasion of the Republic of Cyprus, with 37% of its territory still under occupation by Turkish troops, the Pancyprian Association remains a symbol of resilience and commitment. United with organizations worldwide that champion fundamental rights and democratic principles, the Association continues to amplify the call for justice and reunification.
In recognition of outstanding dedication and service, the Association proudly bestows the prestigious “Dino Iordanou Freedom Award” upon George Halkidis, a longtime supporter whose personal journey reflects the essence of the American dream. Immigrating from Greece in 1970, Halkidis built a successful professional path, from student athlete to Pratt Institute graduate to accomplished businessman, while dedicating 25 years of service to the Association.
Following in the footsteps of influential leaders such as Dino Iordanou, Nikos Mouyiaris, Kokos Andreou, and others, Halkidis is honored for his invaluable contributions to the organization and, in particular, for his steadfast commitment to its renowned soccer program, the NY Pancyprian Freedoms.
“Our association stands strong because of individuals like George,” said Philip Christopher, President of the Pancyprian Association of America. “His dedication embodies the spirit of service, identity, and pride that defines our community.”
