A Historic First for the State and a Proud Moment for the Greek American community.
In a deeply moving and historic ceremony in Henderson, Nevada, community leader and philanthropist Peter Palivos was awarded the United States Army Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest civilian honor granted by the U.S. Army and one of the nation’s most prestigious recognitions for service.
The medal, issued by the order of Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll, is reserved for individuals whose contributions have made an extraordinary impact on the Army and its mission. This year, only three people in the entire country received the distinction and Peter Palivos is the first civilian in Nevada’s 161-year history to be honored with this award.
The presentation was led by General Andrew Poppas, a four-star general and Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces Command, before an audience of more than 100 distinguished guests at the Palivos family residence.
Guests included:
- U.S. Army and Air Force Generals
- U.S. Congresswoman Susie Lee
- Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony
- Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley
- Former Henderson Mayor Debra March
- Dozens of Veterans and community leaders
The evening reflected both dignity and heartfelt celebration, with guests warmly welcomed by the hospitality of Mrs. Vicky Palivos, who ensured the event carried the spirit of gratitude, community, and honor.
A Tribute to a Lifetime of Service
General Poppas spoke powerfully about Mr. Palivos’ more than 30 years of advocacy for Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. He praised Palivos’ integrity, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of America’s heroes — remarks that brought the room to its feet.
Following the General’s remarks, Voice of the Veteran CEO Bob Maxwell read a formal letter from Secretary Driscoll, which commended Palivos for:
- Visionary leadership
- Relentless dedication
- Compassionate service
- Programs that have changed lives across Nevada and the nation
The letter emphasized that Mr. Palivos’ work “embodies the Army values of loyalty, duty, selfless service, and integrity,” and noted that his contributions reflect “great credit to him, Voice of the Veteran, and the United States Army.”
A Call for Unity
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Palivos delivered a heartfelt message about the importance of national unity, urging Americans to set aside political division in favor of shared purpose.
“We should not be Red or Blue Americans,” he said.
“We must be Red, White, and Blue Americans.”
His words resonated deeply with the audience, receiving enthusiastic applause and multiple standing ovations.
