The Hellenic Medical Society (HMS) in New York gathered physicians, scholars, philanthropists, students, and community leaders on December 20 at Cipriani 42nd Street for its 89th Annual Scholarship Gala, an evening that also marked a defining milestone: the 50th anniversary of the Society’s Scholarship Program. Sold out and filled with energy, the night reflected a community united by belief, generosity, and a shared responsibility to invest in the future of Hellenes in medicine.
Founded in 1936, HMS has long stood at the intersection of medicine and humanity. Nearly nine decades later, its mission, rooted in excellence, service, and responsibility, continues to evolve while remaining firmly grounded in the Hellenic ideals that gave the world the Hippocratic Oath. Throughout the evening, one message resonated clearly: HMS is not only honoring its past, but intentionally shaping its next chapter.
An Evening Rooted in Faith, Leadership, and Purpose
The Gala opened with a benediction by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, grounding the evening in spiritual reflection and reaffirming the shared responsibility that guides both medicine and community life. The presence of distinguished guests, including Ms. Iphigenia Ganara, Consul General of Greece in New York; Mr. Kyriakos Pogiatzis, Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus; and Ms. Paulette Poulos, Executive Director of Leadership 100, underscored HMS’s strong ties to the broader Hellenic world and its role as a respected institutional pillar within it.
Guests were welcomed by Dr. Monica Tadros-Athas, Gala Chair, who framed the evening as far more than a celebration. She emphasized that the room itself represented generations gathered with purpose, physicians, scholars, families, mentors, and supporters, united by a shared belief in excellence, service, and lifting one another. Notably, the evening began having already surpassed all previous years of scholarship support for the coming year, a testament to the strength and generosity of the HMS community.
Dr. Antonios Gasparis, President of HMS, followed with a forward-looking address that articulated the Society’s evolving vision. He emphasized mentorship, accessibility, and national growth, outlining a path that expands HMS’s reach beyond geographic boundaries while remaining anchored in its founding values.
Honoring Excellence and Service
The honoree presentations reflected the depth and breadth of HMS’s impact across medicine, leadership, and community life. Dr. Alex Spyropoulos introduced the Society’s Distinguished Physicians, underscoring the connection between clinical excellence and humanitarian responsibility.
Dr. George Velmahos, MD, PhD, internationally recognized for his leadership in trauma care, was honored for contributions that extend well beyond institutional boundaries, shaping practices and outcomes globally, including in Greece. Dr. Irene Souter, MD, a leader in reproductive medicine, was similarly recognized for advancing patient care, research, and innovation while maintaining deep ties to Hellenic values and service.
The title of Distinguished Hellene was bestowed upon Savas C. Tsivicos, introduced by Dr. John Athas, in recognition of his longstanding commitment to Hellenism, leadership, and community advocacy, reinforcing the Society’s belief that medicine and civic responsibility are inseparable.
The evening also honored Dr. George Liakeas, MD, as Distinguished Colleague, introduced by Dr. Eleni Gouzoulis-Koutsos and Mr. Michael Psaros. His recognition carried special significance, as he is a proud member of the HMS Scholarship Class of 1996, representing the very impact the Scholarship Program was designed to create.
The Scholars Circle: A Living Legacy
At the heart of the evening was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of HMS’s Scholarship Program, founded in 1975 on a simple yet powerful belief: that talent, dedication, and character should never be limited by circumstance, and that a strong community has a responsibility to invest in its future.
That belief was powerfully embodied throughout the night. The founder of the Scholarship Program, Dr. Marinos Petratos, who served as HMS President in 1975, was present and recognized as one of the program’s most enduring supporters. Equally moving was the presence of an anonymous angel donor, once a scholarship recipient from the Class of 1985, who has chosen decades later to give back, illustrating the full circle of opportunity, mentorship, and service.
These moments underscored what HMS now formally calls “The Scholars Circle”- a concept articulated and championed by Dr. Monica Tadros-Athas, HMS Board Director of Development. In Hellenic tradition, the circle represents continuity, balance, and shared responsibility, something greater than any one individual. The Scholars Circle brings together those who give and those who grow, bound by the belief that when one rises, the entire community rises with them.
The program concluded with a dazzling vision of the future of Hellenes in Medicine, as Dr. Eleni Gouzoulis-Koutsos, HMS Scholarship Chair, and Dr. Konstantinos Deligiannidis, HMS Treasurer introduced the Class of 2025 Scholars Circle Award Recipients, 27 remarkable scholars representing the full continuum of achievement, from high school and college to medical school, residency, and post-graduate research.
For fifty years, the program has opened doors not only to education, but to mentorship, belonging, and purpose, often because someone believed in a student before that student had the chance to prove themselves.
A Milestone Year and a National Vision
This landmark year saw more than $350,000 raised, made possible by over 110 donors contributing at every level, even before the evening’s program began. It is precisely because of this extraordinary breadth of community support that the Scholars Circle is able not only to sustain its mission, but to grow it. These funds support the HMS Scholarship Fund, a long-standing, community-driven initiative that supports students and young professionals across the educational and professional continuum, from academic study and training to conference participation, research opportunities, and professional development, while advancing toward a sustainable, endowment-focused national model.
For the first time in its history, HMS is intentionally expanding this proven, fifty-year model beyond New York, building a connected national network of mentorship, scholarship, and opportunity for Hellenes in medicine across the United States.
A Legacy in Motion
As HMS approaches its ninth decade and marks fifty years of scholarship, the Society continues to evolve as an inclusive, accessible, and forward-looking institution. Development initiatives including complimentary membership for students and young professionals, monthly programs with focused themes, and plans for a formal educational symposium reinforce HMS’s role as a year-round resource for learning, community connection, and growth.
In a time when healing is needed in every sense of the word, the Hellenic Medical Society of New York stands as a reminder of what is possible when faith, medicine, and community move forward together, rooted in legacy, guided by service, and committed to building the next fifty years with purpose.
