Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras held a teleconference with members of the Greek community in Ukraine on Wednesday, a party announcement said.
During the conversation, the president and vice-president of the Greek community of Odessa outlined their struggle for survival and the fight against time that members of the Greek diaspora in the area are waging in their efforts to flee the war zones in Ukraine.
Tsipras stressed that “it is our obligation to make every effort to end the Russian invasion and for peace, as well as every effort to help the [Greeks] of Ukraine, to save lives and minimise losses.” He also said he was ready to help in every way he can to support the Greeks of Ukraine and would contact the foreign ministry and consular authorities in Mariupol and Odessa in this context.
The main opposition leader also expressed support for the efforts of the Greek consular authorities to help evacuate Greeks from the area, noting the need to keep an escape corridor to neighbouring countries open, with Greece as the final destination.
